Common Tally Mistakes Students Make (and How to Avoid Them)
Learning Tally Prime or Tally ERP 9 is straightforward — but using it correctly is where many students slip up. Small errors can produce wrong financial reports, mismatched balances, incorrect GST entries, or exam-time confusion. Thankfully these mistakes are easy to fix once you know them.
1️⃣ Selecting the Wrong Ledger Group
Placing a ledger in an incorrect group is common and impacts reports like Trial Balance, P&L, Balance Sheet, and GST summary.
Example mistakes:- ❌ Putting a Customer ledger under Miscellaneous
- ❌ Placing Sales under Indirect Income
- ❌ Adding Electricity Bill under Direct Expense
- Learn basic ledger groups before creating ledgers.
- Follow this mapping rule:
Customer → Sundry Debtors|Supplier → Sundry Creditors|Sales → Sales Account|Purchases → Purchase Account
2️⃣ Forgetting to Enable GST or Incorrect GST Settings
Many students create companies or ledgers without enabling GST, so taxes don’t appear on invoices or reports.
Symptoms:- GST not applied on invoices
- Tax reports show empty
- IGST/CGST/SGST not calculated
Enable GST via F11 → Features → Statutory & Taxation → Enable GST : YES. Also configure HSN codes, registration type and ledger tax classification correctly.
3️⃣ Entering Wrong Opening Balances
Incorrect or missing opening balances cause mismatched trial balances and wrong balance sheets.
Common errors:- Entering Debit instead of Credit
- Adding opening balance when not needed
- Leaving balances blank when migrating data
- Only add opening balances if transferring old data.
- Remember:
Assets & Expenses → Debit;Liabilities, Capital & Income → Credit.
4️⃣ Not Linking Inventory with Accounting
Entering stock items without linking them breaks stock updates and invoice tracking.
- Stock not updating in reports
- Invoice numbers missing on purchase/sales
- Wrong closing stock values
F11 → Accounts with Inventory → YES and use stock items in purchase/sales vouchers.
5️⃣ Skipping Voucher Type Selection
Recording transactions in the wrong voucher type results in incorrect reports and confusion.
| Transaction Type | Correct Voucher |
|---|---|
| Purchase | Purchase Voucher |
| Sale | Sales Voucher |
| Payment | Payment Voucher |
| Receipt | Receipt Voucher |
| Cash/Bank Transfer | Contra |
| Journal Adjustments | Journal |
6️⃣ Not Saving Entries Properly
Forgetting to save is an easy slip — entries disappear if not confirmed.
Ctrl + A to save or look for the “Saved Successfully” message after each entry.
7️⃣ Creating Duplicate Ledgers
Multiple similar ledger names (e.g., Cash / Cash A/c / Cash Balance) create chaos during entry and reporting.
- Search first with
Alt + G → Go Tobefore creating a new ledger. - Use a consistent, clear naming convention across the company file.
